10/8/2019 Guitar Amp 6sn7 Sound
Glow in the Dark Audio - Jeremey Fix Single Ended 6sn7Jeremy Fix Single Ended 6SN7Here we have an extremely unusual little single ended 6SN7 amplifier. This was designed and built by Jeremy Fix; a very talented scratch builder who sells his amps on eBay. His website can be found.I’ve never seen another amp that uses the 6SN7 as an output tube and it is really interesting to hear the differences in all of the brands and types. 6SN7 is certainly a rich tube type to pick through, and if you want to know just how a particular type of 6SN7 sounds, this is the amp for you.
Mar 13, 2010 - I have a preamp and SE amp that can use either. I found that the 6SN7's sound much better than the 6SL7's. If you compare the tube charts for.

I’ve found my sweet spot for this one is a combination of Sylvania “bad boys” and RCA grey glass, but NOS Soviet 1578 porthole plate tubes were very good too.At around two watts, I’ve found it needs a bit of preamp gain to play really well on most speakers. That said, the sound here is exceptional. Female vocals in particular are really great with this amp; very much in the room and “live”.
The soundstage is amazing too, and is easily one of the best I have heard. This diminutive little amp that has put several much higher priced pieces of equipment to shame. The circuit is very simple, with only a few very high quality parts. The output transformers are Telefunken and the power transformer is a vintage Stancor unit. As with all of Jeremy’s amplifiers (and I own two of his hi-fi units and a guitar amp), the built quality here is tremendous.
Hi guys, new member here. First post.I am just getting my feet wet in the tube world. So far, my experience has been re-capping and debugging a '73 SFPR, and previously, a mid 70's japanese 18 watt no-name amp. Then, last month, I converted a 50's classroom el84 amplified record player into a small crunchy practice amp.It worked the first time I turned it on, and Now I'm hooked.I recently picked up a really cool looking 1951 Webcor Reel to Reel for $20. Tubes are 6SC7, 6SL7, 6SN7, 6K6, and a 6X5 rectifier tube. It has a burgundy and tweed covered plywood case and cool brass hardware.Obviously, my intention is to turn it into a guitar amp. But the schematic and the layout are much more complicated than than my record player conversion was, and I don't know exactly what to cut out of the circuit.Questions:Is this a good amp for conversion? What is the 6k6 doing way out there alone?
And what is that oscillator coil doing up there with it?What is each tube being used for? I count 3 preamp type tubes, one power tube, and one rectifier, but I really can't tell what is going on here.Is this tube line-up similar to any Fender amp I might use as a reference point? What should I cut out of this circuit? Also, this schematic is from a 8meg photo and is being hosted on photobucket. Anyone know why it is so small and won't enlarge? It has a mic input, but it's a weird little plug - not a 1/4' phone jack input. I could sub one in and see what happens.I don't fully understand amp theory, but I did manage to modify my previous hack fairly seriously. This was on a small record player amp. I removed it's NFB loop and cut out the existing tone stack - which was placed before the preamp tube, then built a new tone stack (based on the Tweed Deluxe) and put it between the preamp and the power tube.
It works fine and hasn't caught fire yet so I guess that's something.I was hoping to do a similar thing to this one, but before I opened it up, I thought the 6K6GT was the power tube. And that the job would mostly be a process of subtraction, plus moding the tone stack. But if this is a 2 watt amp I guess it's not worth the effort unless I can somehow use that 6K6 as a power tube. This won't be a simple conversion like the record player.I would say 2 watts in generous, the 6SN7 was the octal equivalent of a 12AU7, it my be 2 watts peak.
And a power amp is far more than its tube type; you could rebuild the whole power amp to use whatever octal tube you want, but that'll mean completey rewiring, redesigning, introducing more plate voltage, and replacing the OT.It's a nice looking chassis and cabinet, I can't see the transformers, but it could be a good donor chassis for gutting out.
